Robotic prototype system for assistance in surgery

Robotic system ROKI is designed and developed for assistance in surgery. Croatia has begun to develop robotics in medicine with this project, financed by the Croatian Institute of Technology. Universitiy of Zadar, as project manager, formed a project team of 11 researchers who have defined and conceived the first concept design of the project. Concept design development, engineering, production, controls and final testing of the robotic system were performed in the company HSTEC.

Highly sophisticated robotic equipment helps the surgeon during operations by providing a motion picture of the operative field using a special camera. Specially designed robotic arm can be used as a gripper of surgical instruments and even the heart on which the surgery takes place. Robotic system control is possible by using pre-programmed routines and a joystick located on the control console. Touch-panel on the console provides easy operation of the system providing control of the four rotary and one linear robot\'s axis. There is also a possibility of voice control which facilitates the surgical operations. During an operation, the robotic system creates a video record of the whole procedure which is automatically archived in its own database.

ROKI, as the first Croatian robotic system for assistance in surgery, represents a prerequisite for further innovation development in robotic surgery (cardiac surgery, bone surgery, neurosurgery, laparoscopy) and has made a remarkable positive technological progress in medicine.
